Have you got what it takes?

These aren’t back-office roles. While you might not be thrust into the face of consumers, you will need to get along with different types of people at all levels of seniority. Good service and interpersonal skills are vital. There’s a constant need for creative thinkers. High on employers’ wish lists are:

  • Strong team players, sharing knowledge and expertise
  • Sense of purpose and commitment
  • Energy and drive
  • Problem solvers
  • Clear communicators (both verbal and written)
  • Organisational skills.

Good grades and academic success, while not always essential, are indications of commitment – particularly for people wanting high-level responsibility early on. Competition for posts can be high, so employers may also look for examples that demonstrate your determination, such as sporting, community service or other cultural and extra-curricular activities.
